| I'm alive |
[Mar. 28th, 2009|03:27 pm] |
Hey all,
I'm alive. Sorry I haven't written much this month. I've been busy and I've been lazy. I just haven't really felt like I had that thing I needed/wanted to write about. Over the past few months I've made quite a few new friends which has been fun. :) I've also spent some quality time with some old ones recently too.
Almost 1/3 into the year and I feel like I'm behind on the New Years resolutions that I've made. Shall we revisit them?
1.) Get rid of stuff. I've only done a little bit of that. I think once the weather gets nicer I'll get more into it.
2.) Cook some stuff for the freezer. I have done nothing with this, however, I've cooked a LOT of stuff that's lasted a few days for meals. So I don't feel too bad here.
3.) Keep learning Arabic. I feel like I'm way behind on this one. I still listen to the stuff, but I just am not really into it like I was before. I think WoW had something to do with that. I recently just had my last day on WoW for a while, so perhaps I'll try and turn that time into Arabic study time (or put it towards the other 2 goals).
I created my todo list again and already have some things checked off. Hopefully this will get me motivated and I'll feel like I've accomplished things. Heh, maybe I should put update LJ on my todo list. ;)
This week I plan on getting my hair cut and perhaps colored. I think that might energize me somewhat as well. :) |

This is a video of Bali from 1910. It's so cool for me to watch and see how many things look the same.
Just so ya know there are topless women in the video, so be careful watching it @ work.

| New Year |
[Jan. 8th, 2009|10:24 am] |
Hey all,
It's been a couple of weeks since I've posted anything.
I plan on working on the Bali photos tonight. Hopefully it'll mean we will get them posted this weekend.
I've made a couple of New Years Resolutions:
1.) Get rid of stuff. I plan to try to follow the 10 year rule (maybe even the 5 year rule) and get rid of as much stuff that I haven't used in that time frame. Anything that I think someone else will want I'll post on LJ or contact that person directly.
2.) Cook some stuff for the freezer. I'd like to make some meals that we could just yank out of the freezer and heat up. I do this once in a while, but I really would like to do it a little more frequently.
3.) Keep learning Arabic. |

Well, we are home and I'm back @ work once again. It might take a few days to get photos up, but here's a sneak preview. This is a shot of the sunset from Kudeta.

A couple of other thoughts about the trip:
- We were in the Southern Hemisphere. Looking at the night sky was sooooo cool. It felt almost like being on an alien world (with the exception that Orion was visable).
- I opened the cookbook last night and am excited at trying some of the recipes.
- I had 3 cups of Bali coffee today am now pretty WIRED! ;) |

| In transit |
[Dec. 22nd, 2008|11:47 am] |
Hey all,
We're in the Osaka airport right now with a bit of a layover. We had some rice balls for lunch and now are just waiting for our flight to board. There's a potential that we might take a later flight since this one is pretty full and they might have overbooked.
The last afternoon/evening in Bali was excellent as I'm sure you guessed. We ended up doing some more shopping in the market and of course packing. We ate dinner again @ Ketut's and shared a table with a guy from Singapore and a gal from China. Their English was amazing and they of course knew all about our country and the recent financial and auto problems. Ketut and his family all helped us out to the van to wish us a good trip. The driver was the same guy as the day we went out to the countryside and he was wearing the shirt we gave him. He picked up his wife for the ride and she was wearing the shirt we gave him for her. It was hard to leave.
Hopefully pictures up soon. ;) |

| Bye bye Bali |
[Dec. 21st, 2008|08:26 am] |
Well, we begin our last day here @ the Internet place (a different one since the regular one wasn't quite open yet). Confirmed flights. Figured out what we need for exit taxes and what we can bring back to the states in the form of alcohol and tobacco.
No cooking class for me this trip. :( Last night Ketut's wife said she really couldn't do it just for one. Oh well, I guess that gives me a reason to come back here. ;)
Last night the puppet show was excellent! One dude did all the puppets and voices and he spoke in 3 different languages. We did a bunch of shopping yesterday and am going to do some more today.
C also has a spa treatment that begins an hour from now.
Cya all in about 2 days! |

| Legong, Japanese food and an interesting beverage |
[Dec. 20th, 2008|12:54 pm] |
Hey all here's another update and I just noticed that the computers at this Internet place all run Ubuntu! w00t!
Last night we went to see a Legong performance. Holy crap was it awesome! The performance included live gamelan music, dancing girls that sometimes performed very precise mirrored movements of each other, a dancing and gamelan performing guy, dancing demons, ghosts, trees, and some others. So cool! I took a bunch of photos & videos, but because of the movements I'm not sure how well they all turned out.
After the performance we headed for dinner @ a Japanese restaurant that has a few branches throughout Bali. I had a chirachi, miso soup, a tall beer and C had baked rice balls and a lemon juice drink. The whole meal was around $12 and was the tastiest melt-in-your-mouth sushi I've ever had.
We then headed back to Ketut's place, drank some arak (the Balinese kind which is very different than the Arabic kind) and played "butterfingers" while watching an episode of the Office on the PSP.
This morning I went down to attend the cooking class but found out that Ketut's wife had cancelled it because she was scared of C's allergy and the other person attending cancelled on her. She said tonight she'd let me know if we can do it tomorrow instead. I did pick up a cookbook yesterday, so if I can't get the class at least I'll have that.
We headed down to the marketplace this morning and on the way stopped at a street cart and for about 50 cents had a very interesting murkey beverage. It was made from muddling some leaves, water, tumeric and honey. I decided to pass on the optional raw egg just in case. ;)
Tonight we are going to attend a shadow puppet performance and tomorrow will be mostly shopping and packing. I can't believe we're headed back for the land of snow. |

| A long hot walk |
[Dec. 17th, 2008|01:58 pm] |
Hello again from Bali.
I forgot to mention in our last post about the dinner that we had with the Irish guys. We walked into a place that evening and sat down to order food. Before we knew it the guy just brought food to the table. We didn't really "order" anything. It was all pretty excellent though as most meals have been.
So last night C decided that she wanted to do it up so we went to Mozaic. This place is fancy fancy for food and beverage, but because the place is located in Bali the dress code is somewhat relaxed (we saw some guys in tshirts at one table). The service was amazing and the food was fantastic. We ordered the Chef's Suprise menu and had no idea what they were bringing us for every course. C showed them her gluten-free note and they had absolute no problem in accomidating her with fancy stuff that was gluten-free.
Today we took a long walk. We visited the Palace here in Ubud and then walked through the Monkey Forest. It was really fun and luckily we didn't get any monkeys trying to steal our stuff. We walked through a village that is traditional for their wood carvings and saw all kinds of cool carvings of all shapes, sizes and naughtyness (wooden penis bottle openers seem to be a favorite). On the walk back we stopped for lunch at a roadside warung and had a just a wonderful and inexpensive lunch of chicken, egg fritters, tempe and rice. Unfortunately we didn't bring a map so on the way back our walk took a wrong turn and we walked for quite a long ways in the heat by mistake.
Tonight is the traditional Balinese dinner @ Ketut's place and tomorrow we plan on going for a day trip to the volcano, the Elephant Cave and other places. And tomorrow evening is Kecak!
Oh yeah and we found the FAST Internet place in town. :) |

| Ubud and Beyond |
[Dec. 16th, 2008|02:45 pm] |
Hi all,
We've moved to Ubud which is the main artistic center of Bali. Apparently it's not the Internet center of Bali because the first place we went to was down because their tower blew down and the place we're at right now is super slow. So...updates might not happen as frequently as they have up until now. (It's more expensive too)
Yesterday we hung out with a couple of guys from Ireland. And by hung out I mean drank with. And as I'm sure you can understand drinking with Irish guys means not remembering part of the evening, especially the walk home. Thankfully C walked me home. :)
Ok, now if you all really want to hate us. I'll give you a good reason. We just ate at Ibu Oka. Yep. The same one that Anthony Bourdain said had the best pork he ever ate. ZOMG DELICIOUS!! We got lots of pics and video of it too.
We're staying at Ketut's Place. The view out our window is spectacular and the people are so so friendly. I'm not sure what we're doing tonight, but tomorrow night there's a big Balinese dinner @ Ketut's Place. Thursday I'll be taking a cooking class from Ketut's wife and Thursday night we are going to see the Kecak! :) |
